STATE SEEKS ADVICE ON EMPLOYMENT SERVICES FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES

Wednesday, June 25,
2008 - 9:00a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The public is invited to a
forum on employment services for Minnesotans with disabilities to be held in
Golden Valley on
Wednesday, June 25.

The meeting will be hosted by the Minnesota State
Rehabilitation Council in partnership with the Golden Valley Human Rights
Commission and the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development
(DEED).

The event is scheduled from
9 a.m. to 6 p.m., in the City Council chambers, Golden Valley City Hall, 7800 Golden Valley
Rd.

The public is welcome at any time throughout the
day. No registration is required to attend.

The morning session, from
9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., features a dialogue between council members and a panel
of experts on employment discrimination and disability.

The afternoon session
is set aside for State Rehabilitation Council members to hear from the public
about unmet needs for disability related employment services in Minnesota, and about
public satisfaction with current services.

At least 175,000
Minnesotans of working age experience significant difficulty finding or keeping
employment due to long-lasting disabilities, according to Kimberley Peck,
director of DEED's Rehabilitation Services and a member of the State
Rehabilitation Council. Rehabilitation Services has offices statewide,
assisting individuals with disabilities to prepare for, find or keep jobs and
careers of their choice. Peck said information will also be available at the
forum for high school and college students interested in learning about careers
with Rehabilitation Services.

DEED's Rehabilitation
Services branch maintains offices at each of the state's WorkForce Centers,
offering services through its Vocational Rehabilitation, Extended Employment and
Independent Living programs.

Contact Gail
Lundeen, DEED Rehabilitation Services, toll-free at 1-800-328-9095, or
651-259-7364; or TTY at 1-800-657-3973 for questions about the forum or requests
for accommodations. Real-time captioning and sign language interpreters will be
available.

Only sixty days planning to get out of nursing home

New rules from Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) would make it harder for nursing home residents to move out in the community.

If proposed rule changes go into effect, only 60 days of relocation services will be funded rather than the 180 days of relocation services available. Bottom line: many would not be able to get out of the nursing home at all. Eva Hansen, manager of MCIL's relocation program, estimates that 70% or more of relocation cases take longer than 60 days.

Read the full story from Access Press:

Sixty Days to Plan the Move

Contact your legislator to tell them this rule cannot be changed!
Watch for sample letters to be posted on this site.

Go here for contact information for your legislators.
