About

Removing Barriers. Promoting Choices.

At the Metropolitan Center for Independent Living (MCIL), we are committed to empowering members of the disability community on a pathway to overcome barriers and to discover access, choices, and the possibilities to realize their goals and aspirations.

The heart and soul of our work is elevating the equality of each person’s inalienable rights to have and achieve their goals, and to live the fullness of life as they best determine. From securing better housing or competitive employment, accessing financial benefits planning to lead to better prosperity, coordinating personalized care services, or developing new skills, we help individuals pursue their choices for a better life, a life of independent living.

Through our programs and active advocacy for policies that better serve people with disabilities, we assist thousands of individuals in achieving independent living and accessible integration with and in the community. We are deeply driven to do this work and moved daily by the success stories of those we serve.

MCIL was established in 1981 and is founded on the Independent Living Philosophy embraced by more than 400 Centers for Independent Living Centers (CIL) across the United States. MCIL is a consumer-directed, organization, meaning at least fifty percent our employees and board members are individuals with disabilities. We are a non-profit organization, based in St. Paul, Minnesota, and serve the Twin Cities seven-county metro area. With more than 140 full-time-equivalent employees, and a wide range of services, programs, resources, and partnerships, MICL is the largest CIL in Minnesota. Our Board of Directors, employees, and volunteers join in a shared commitment to mindful practices, thoughtful stewardship, compassionate care, and responsive services that meet the community’s ever-changing needs.

We believe in a world of opportunities, choices, and the freedom to live those choices.
Contact us today to discuss how we can best be of service to you.
