Aubrey

Young woman wearing a University of Minnesota cheerleader outfit smiling to the camera.

“I love that as a PCA I get to build a unique independent relationship while learning unparalleled skills like empathy and respectfulness with the person you care for. It is truly an experience that teaches medical workplace expertise along with prowess to shape who you are and how you interact with others in the real world. I would recommend this job to anyone who is considering entering the medical field, or who enjoys a human connection built workplace setting.”

Linda

A woman in a power wheelchair and two of her PCAs.

“I have so appreciated the students who have provided PCA services to me in my home. I feel like it is such a benefit for me to receive the level of care I need to live independently. It is also a benefit to them for gaining the skills they need to be successful. Many are pursuing a career in the medical field or social services. However, some of them are just doing it to gain experience with people with disabilities. I appreciate the energy, dedication and caring that they bring to the job!”

James

"One of the statements that I try to live by with PCA work is weA young man wearing a red shirt with white and orange stripes, smiling while outdoors. are there to assist with providing a life of independent living. Offering people the gift to be independent gives a sense of identity or a type of 'selfness' where people have the life of their own choices and their own actions to the best of their ability.

I realized that you will meet people who need some help getting back to being their best. Whether their physical or mental health, concerns, worries, people trust you with these things. One of the truest ways I've found of myself is my deep wanting to help people when they don't seem to be at their best. One of my greatest joys is simply seeing Tyler thrive with the help he has around him, but also for other patients who get the help they need from others willing to serve. My experience with Tyler as well as encouragement and guidance from Michelle from the PCA College Service Corps, solidified my willingness to pursue medical school to continue to serve. I'm thankful to the opportunity given to me to know what I want to do in life. God called me to serve."

Disability Viewpoints with Sam

In the March 18, 2024 episode of Disability Viewpoints, host Nick Wilkie talks with Samantha Drost about how the PCA College Service Corps initiative will try to meet the demand for Personal Care Attendants for people with disabilities.

We are thankful to the Minnesota State Legislature and the Margaret A. Cargill Foundation Fund of the Saint Paul & Minnesota Foundation for support in launching the PCA College Service Corps!

This work was supported by the Department of Human Services – Disability Services Division.
