In-Person Classes & Activities

The Metropolitan Center for Independent Living (MCIL) offers numerous in-person classes and activities at our building in downtown St. Paul. These are offered in a hybrid format, and people are also welcome to attend virtually via Zoom. These are free to the public and offered on an ongoing basis.

Our current class schedule can be found on our online registration form. Please contact MCIL with any questions at info@mcil-mn.org or 651-646-8342. MCIL is located at 530 Robert Street North, St. Paul, 55101. Class offerings change on a quarterly basis and may include any of the following:

Budgeting

Join us for a look at the basics of budgeting. Learn about basic needs and setting priorities to manage this over time. This class will help you begin to understand your financial situation and what you can do as things change.

Benefits

This workshop will explore the different benefits available to people with disabilities. You will learn who qualifies, how to access the program, and resources that can assist you as you go through the application process.

Case Management

Have questions about CADI/BI case management? Join us to learn more about navigating services with your case manager. This class is designed for individuals already utilizing CADI/BI case management.

Housing

In this workshop we will cover searching for affordable, accessible housing, applying for subsidized or market-rate housing, and connecting to existing housing resources in the community.

Independent Living Top 10

Come have an engaging discussion about 10 concepts that will help you gain confidence in how to approach independent living. Help you participate more fully in your community. You will walk away with tools to increase your self advocacy skills.

Assertiveness

Join us as we unpack assertiveness. What it means to be assertive, how you can develop assertiveness, and how you can use assertiveness in your daily life. You will see how assertiveness can assist you in your self-advocacy. Gaining these skills will help you take charge of your goals and desires.

Breaking Down Self-Advocacy

Learn what it means to advocate for yourself. Explore different scenarios designed to create discussion regarding troubleshooting what to do in everyday life situations. This can include learning about your disability, how to ask for help, how to request an accommodation, and where to go for help.

Goal Setting/Realistic Planning

Goal setting is important to get you to where you want to be. This class will discuss the importance of goal setting and how achieving small goals can help you build towards larger goals. We will use the SMART process as a model on how to set goals for yourself. We will also break down the planning process so that goals do not become overwhelming.

Driver’s Ed Prep for Permit Test

If you are interested in having assistance with learning what you need to know to secure your driver’s permit and get ready for the test, this is the class for you. You will receive help with learning the information in the driver's manual and getting prepared to take the test.  This class will meet every two weeks. You will need to do some work outside of class times.
